Bombe Chest

The many styles of the bombe chest include hand painted, traditional French, and modern designs.

The bombe chest can traced right back to the historical era of King Louis XVI during the French Regency period. Modern bombe chests keep something of the original shape and have a hint of that old classical French Regency period design to them. They are now available in lots of different wood finishes, colors, and styles to match today’s modern decor. They are often hand painted bombe chests and can be bought in lots of designs at varying costs. After the king died his son, who was only a child  became King of France and the furniture makers at court changed to a Louis XV style which was slightly smaller and less intimidating for the boy. Of course, this soon became fashionable throughout the land.

At the top of the range where bombe chest furniture is concerned is the Masterpiece Three Drawer Bombe Chest made and designed by Powell furniture is a classic design. It stands at thirty seven inches high, twenty one wide and twenty inches deep and comes in a beautiful dark cherry red wood colour. It is a good, solid French bombe chest  and comes in the original Louis XV double bombe shape and has very decorative fittings. It has ormolu mounts and the wood is carved with shell designs and acanthus leaves. The feet are carved too and have a scrolled finish to them. The wood is softwood resembling plantation cherry wood with burl grain and a carefully hand detailed finish. A bombe chest like this one would cost around $775, or more.

A bombe chest of drawers to suit those who do not want to spend quite as much money can easily be found and a search around the internet revealed several options, some of which were even made of a very cheap plastic. Like all furniture, you really do get what you pay for when buying bombe chests.

Less elaborate ones come in many different sizes can be bought from under a hundred dollars depending on what you want. However, if you are looking to create that French Regency look in your home, fairly dark wood with hand carving is the really opulent way to go.

These furniture pieces can also be bought in kit form and the pieces are made from white wood. You finish the wood after you have built your unfinished bombe chest with the wood dye that you prefer. The wooden carved effect leaves are glued to the front imitating carved wood. Obviously furniture constructed this way is not very strong, or serviceable and is best kept for purely decorative purposes, it can look very attractive if it is finished well.

Whatever you want to do with your bombe chest and wherever you wish to put it in your home, there is something out there to suit your needs and pocket. All you have to do is to search round a bit and one of the best places to start in by searching the internet. Typing bombe chest into the search engines will bring up lots of possibilities.
